I suffered my first hard disk failure a few weeks ago. It was not a pleasant experience. There was no warning just a grinding noise then a few beeps and the disappearance of a drive letter from windows. Now all the drive does is beep when the PC is powered on. Oh, and rattles when I shake it!!!

That'll teach me not to take backups.

I lost loads of music especially mashups and old skool mixes but the worst thing is I don't know exactly what I've lost. I know some TdV mixes have gone (stuff downloaded from the mixing bowl and no longer seeded) but fortunately none of my Naughty But Nice mixes.

I'll start uploading to here again soon as it has proved an invaluable backup!!! Also, as I've had to buy a replacement drive I've now got space to rip more tapes.

I'd really really really hate to lose my music collection. I have 950Gb of disks space, in a RAID mirror setup - i.e. 475Gb usable disk space - every file is automatically stored on 2 disks in realtime.

If a disk dies, the other takes over with no loss.. In general use it also doubles the speed of reading files, as reads are shared amongst both drives in parallel.

As for the server, *that* is backed up every night to another of my home machines (the one I use as a router, a small 'book-pc' thing that is always switched on)
